Carter Cemetery was established in the mid 1860's on land given by Joseph Elmore Carter, Sr. to be used for the burial of his relatives and members of the Simpson Creek and Daisy communities. Carter Cemetery has been recognized for this historic significance by being placed on the Horry County Historic Property Register.
Carter Cemetery Trust was organized April 4, 2009 consisting of seven descendants of Elmore Carter all with the same goal - to maintain and preserve Carter Cemetery, to encourage appreciation and respect for its intended purpose, to improve its general appearance, to foster community concern for the care of this historic site, and to develop financial resources to support the continuing care of the cemetery.
Carter Cemetery is a tangible history lesson of our area. Generations of families are buried there, families whose ancestors cleared land with mules and oxen, taught their children about the ethics of hard work and honesty, and established businesses and schools in the area.
For many, many years Carter Cemetery was cared for by family and community members. It was an annual tradition on Thanksgiving day that family - from the youngest to the oldest - would meet at the cemetery and spend the afternoon cleaning the grounds together. As time passed, Billy Boyd took the reins and kept the cemetery up because "it was the right thing to do". With the forming of the Trust, we have been able to assure that money is available for upkeep and improvement and now Billy's son, Carroll, and Carroll's son, Elliott, have taken the reins.
